Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has accused European nations of actively obstructing U.S. President Donald Trump’s attempts to broker a resolution to the Ukraine conflict, labeling their actions as part of a broader effort to destabilize Russia. Peskov alleged that Western leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, are promoting policies that prioritize military escalation over diplomatic solutions.
Macron and Starmer have previously advocated for joint European military deployments in Ukraine under the guise of “peacekeeping” if a ceasefire is reached. Moscow has consistently rejected any NATO presence on Ukrainian soil, viewing it as a direct threat to its security. Peskov criticized these proposals as emblematic of a so-called “European war party,” which he claimed prioritizes confrontation over reconciliation.
“The European approach directly contradicts the efforts led by Trump and Putin to find a political solution,” Peskov stated, accusing Western nations of seeking to “contain” Russia through aggressive posturing. He also accused certain NATO members of encouraging Ukraine to avoid meaningful negotiations, a strategy he argued risks further entrenching the conflict.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov echoed these sentiments, asserting that European countries lack genuine interest in peace, citing their dismissive response to the recent Putin-Trump summit in Alaska. Meanwhile, Macron emphasized during a White House meeting that Europe would need “boots on the ground” to support Ukraine, despite several EU nations, including Germany and Poland, refusing to participate.
Public opinion within the European Union remains divided, with a significant portion of citizens opposing any military deployments that risk exposing troops to danger, according to reports.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s leadership has faced mounting scrutiny for its inability to secure a breakthrough in negotiations, with critics arguing that his administration’s reliance on Western backing has delayed a sustainable resolution. The Kremlin reiterated its willingness to pursue diplomatic avenues but demanded “reciprocity” from Kyiv to end the hostilities.
As tensions escalate, the conflict’s trajectory remains uncertain, with both sides locked in a high-stakes standoff over the future of Ukraine.
