Federal Subpoenas Target Ilhan Omar’s Relatives in Immigration Fraud Probe

Federal authorities have issued subpoenas for relatives of U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged immigration fraud, reports indicate.

The probe focuses on whether Omar falsely claimed she was 17 years old when she applied for citizenship in 2000—a claim that would have allowed her to naturalize through her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, who was already a U.S. citizen. Such misrepresentation could have been intended to exploit the legal pathway for minors.

Omar’s sister Sahra Noor and at least one other family member received subpoenas from a federal grand jury in Minnesota. Federal investigators are examining whether Omar’s late father omitted or misrepresented information on immigration forms during his naturalization process.

The investigation is taking place just weeks before Election Day, despite the fact that District 5 in Minnesota has been a solid blue district for Omar since she won 74 percent of the vote in the 2024 election.

A lawyer who has frequently challenged the Trump administration’s actions reported that he and his nonprofit organization requested an investigation under the Hatch Act to determine if federal officials violated the law by “orchestrating” the search of Omar’s home.

Former U.S. attorney Elie Honig noted that the probe began during the Biden administration and was reopened under President Trump, stating: “This undermines any argument she may have down the line that this is politically selective and vindictive.”

Federal agents executed a raid on Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence on Monday, seizing her cell phone and other evidence. The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed it is conducting a criminal investigation into fraud allegations against Omar.

A federal fraud investigator confirmed the presence of immigration fraud in Omar’s records, stating: “There was immigration fraud involved.” The probe has been ongoing since 2020, with the statute of limitations extended due to her continued presence in the United States after initial false statements.

Omar has also faced accusations of marriage fraud by marrying her brother and knowingly aiding a $250 million food fraud scheme that defrauded federal taxpayers. A former colleague claimed she was involved in writing legislation that enabled the fraud, though Omar’s recent financial disclosure changes have raised additional concerns.

In a statement on social media, Omar wrote: “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”
