Ian Andre Roberts, an illegal alien from Guyana who served as superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools in Iowa, was arrested by ICE after being identified as a registered Democrat voter in Maryland. Roberts, who overstayed a student visa from 1999, received mail-in ballots for federal and state elections since 2020 despite not being a U.S. citizen.
Roberts, who had a criminal record involving weapons charges, was found armed with a Glock and a knife during his arrest and attempted to flee authorities. His registration as an active voter in Maryland—where non-citizens are prohibited from voting—has sparked scrutiny over election integrity. Republican state Delegate Matt Morgan, chair of the Maryland House Freedom Caucus, highlighted the contradiction, questioning how an undocumented individual could remain on voter rolls.
Morgan criticized the Maryland State Board of Elections for allegedly obstructing federal compliance efforts, citing concerns about using voter data for immigration enforcement. A letter from the board to the Department of Justice in August cited fears that sharing information with federal authorities would harm Maryland residents. Morgan demanded answers, stating, “If illegal aliens are not allowed to vote, why would they be on the voter rolls in the first place?”
The controversy has intensified calls to address voting eligibility and immigration enforcement.
