Louisiana AG Murrill Warns New Orleans Police Chief Over Immigration Enforcement Cooperation

In a stern letter to New Orleans police chief Anne Kirkpatrick, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has warned the city’s top law enforcement official that her department must fully cooperate with federal immigration authorities. The warning comes after Chief Kirkpatrick claimed entering the country illegally is not a criminal matter requiring cooperation.

Murrill’s office cites state and federal legal obligations to enforce immigration laws, pointing out that “a person commits a federal felony if knowing or in reckless disregard of fact they harbor an undocumented immigrant.” She emphasized that local law enforcement must support federal immigration enforcement unless it falls under the narrow exceptions provided by law.
