First Lady Melania Trump disclosed on Friday that she has maintained an “open channel of communication” with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding children affected by the Russia-Ukraine war. The revelation came during remarks delivered from the White House Grand Foyer, where she emphasized collaboration with Putin to address the plight of displaced minors.
“We have agreed to cooperate with each other for the benefit of all people involved in this war,” Trump stated, adding that eight children had been reunited with their families within the past 24 hours. She detailed a letter sent to Putin earlier this year, which was hand-delivered by President Donald Trump during his August meeting with the Russian leader in Alaska. The document urged action to protect children impacted by the conflict, prompting a written response from Putin that outlined plans for Ukrainian children residing in Russia.
Trump highlighted ongoing efforts by her representative to coordinate with Putin’s team on child reunification, noting that Russia had provided “detailed reports” confirming the success of recent operations. She described the initiative as a “shared purpose” aimed at fostering a future free from war’s devastation, stating, “A child’s soul knows no borders, no flags.”
The first lady’s remarks followed previous accounts from President Trump, who acknowledged Melania’s role in shaping his approach to Putin. During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump recounted how his wife’s skepticism of his diplomatic overtures with the Russian president influenced his decision to increase military support for Ukraine. “She said, ‘Oh, really? Another city was just hit,’” Trump reportedly told reporters, citing her reaction to his calls with Putin.
