Miraculous Recovery: 12-Year-Old Shooting Survivor Discharged from Hospital

Nearly two months after being shot in the head by a transgender school shooter at Annunciation Catholic School, 12-year-old Sophia Forchas has been released from the hospital. The incident occurred in August, leaving multiple children dead and Sophia in critical condition. Her family describes her recovery as a miracle, attributing it to “the intervention of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Sophia’s journey remains ongoing, but her progress is described as extraordinary. On October 23, 2025, her parents, Tom and Amy Forchas, announced her discharge via a GoFundMe update, which has raised over $1.1 million. The statement thanked medical teams at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), Gillette Children’s Hospital, and others for their “world-class care.” Sophia’s recovery includes improving speech, mobility, and strength, with her family emphasizing the “boundless grace of God” and global prayers.

The family also expressed continued grief for those killed or injured in the August shooting, urging ongoing support for all affected. Sophia’s release coincided with her 13th birthday, marking a pivotal moment in her healing process.

Dr. Walt Galicich, chief of neurosurgery at Hennepin Healthcare, noted earlier uncertainties about her prognosis but highlighted gradual improvements. Sophia was transferred to rehab in September before returning to HCMC for discharge.

The story underscores resilience amid tragedy, with her family calling for prayers for her continued recovery and the broader community impacted by the incident.
