Molotov Cocktail Attack on OpenAI CEO’s Home Sparks Outrage as Police Make Arrest

San Francisco police have arrested a suspect accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at the residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, with no injuries reported in the incident according to authorities.

The arrest followed a response by officers to a home in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood at 4:12 a.m. Friday during an ongoing fire investigation, as confirmed by the police department. Altman addressed the situation in a blog post shared publicly after the suspect’s detention, stating, “Here is a photo of my family. I love them more than anything.” He added that he made the post to dissuade others from targeting his home with similar acts of violence.

In his detailed reflections, Altman emphasized the growing anxiety surrounding artificial intelligence development. He wrote that the fear and concerns about AI’s societal impact are “justified,” noting the industry is witnessing “the largest change to society in a long time.” Altman called for urgent global efforts to ensure safety and resilience, stressing that “AI has to be democratized” rather than controlled by a few entities.

The CEO also acknowledged past conflicts with OpenAI’s board—where he was temporarily removed before re-hiring following an internal investigation—and expressed regret for his handling of the situation, stating, “I am sorry to people I’ve hurt and wish I had learned more faster.” Altman concluded his post by affirming progress at OpenAI: “Against all odds, we figured out how to build very powerful AI” while prioritizing safety and scalability.
