New York Gov. Kathy Hochul Endorses Zohran Mamdani for Mayor Amid Political Tensions

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has endorsed Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral election. In an op-ed, Hochul stated, “I am endorsing Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani.” She noted having “frank conversations” with Mamdani, acknowledging disagreements but emphasizing shared commitments to safety, opportunity, and affordability in New York. Hochul highlighted their discussions on policing, antisemitism, and the economy, stressing that the next mayor must resist “surrendering one inch to Donald Trump.”

Hochul’s endorsement followed months of pressure from progressive Democrats and increased scrutiny after President Trump entered the race. Trump criticized her decision, labeling Mamdani a “‘Liddle’ Communist” and calling the move “a rather shocking development.” Hochul, who is seeking re-election as New York’s governor, praised Mamdani’s affordability platform while noting she does not agree with all his goals.

Meanwhile, Trump suggested Mamdani is likely to win the race, calling it a “rebellion.” The political landscape remains tense as former Gov. Andrew Cuomo faces challenges from Mamdani in polls.
