Putin Meets with US Envoy as Peace Proposal Advances Amid Wartime Deterioration

Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks at the Kremlin on Tuesday with representatives from Washington, focusing on key elements of a peace plan. US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, participated in these discussions.

In an address following the meeting, Donald Trump noted that both Witkoff and Kushner felt Mr. Putin still desired to reach a diplomatic resolution. “He would like to end the war… That was their impression,” Mr. Trump remarked. He added his earlier advocacy for peace earlier this year remains relevant despite current developments in Ukraine.

Russia’s presidential aide Yury Ushakov confirmed that the meeting between Witkoff, Kushner and Putin was constructive but declined to disclose further details regarding an overarching agreement reached or not.

Concurrently, at a press conference held at the Oval Office on Wednesday, Mr. Trump acknowledged his suggestion for peace earlier this year. He stressed that urging Ukraine during that period would have been beneficial given then-prevailing circumstances.

Moscow has maintained discretion about these negotiations while asserting its position against excessive public diplomacy. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated specific aspects of the proposal were accepted by Kiev, with other points considered unacceptable; however, he refrained from elaboration regarding particular disagreements or outcomes.

The ongoing conflict continues to escalate militarily in Russia’s favor since Trump’s suggestions arrived on the scene.
