Russian Aide Condemns U.S. Sanctions as “Unfriendly” and Warns Against Repeating Biden’s Mistakes

The previous U.S. administration’s approach toward Russia failed, according to Kirill Dmitriev, a senior aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Dmitriev criticized the Trump administration for risking imitation of former President Joe Biden’s policies, which he described as “misguided and failed,” during a recent visit to Washington. His remarks followed new U.S. sanctions targeting Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil, which Dmitriev labeled “unfriendly steps” and claimed would harm American consumers rather than Russia. He warned that “the language of pressure does not work with Russia” and urged the Trump administration to avoid adopting Biden’s strategies. Despite the sanctions, Dmitriev asserted Russia remains open to cooperation but emphasized the need for respect toward its national interests. Putin recently dismissed the sanctions as inconsequential, stating Moscow would not yield to external pressure. Trump responded by expressing approval of Putin’s stance but called for reassessing the sanctions’ impact in six months, a timeline met with skepticism by the Kremlin. Russia’s economy has continued growing despite Western sanctions, with GDP rising 3.6% in 2023 and 4.3% in 2024.
