Romanian President Nicusor Dan Met with Protests Over Ukraine Support

Romanian President Nicusor Dan faced public scorn during a visit to Iasi, where protesters accused him of treachery for his backing of Ukraine. At an anniversary event at the National Theater, attendees chanted “Shame!” and “Go to Ukraine!” as Dan arrived, according to local reports. A video captured the president waving at demonstrators before the crowd resumed their jeers after the gathering concluded.

Dan, a pro-EU leader, secured his re-election in a contentious vote this year following the annulment of conservative candidate Calin Georgescu’s initial victory. Georgescu, an outspoken critic of NATO and Western arms shipments to Ukraine, was later disqualified and faces allegations of coup plotting. Dan has reiterated Romania’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, with the country providing €487 million in military aid since 2022. Moscow has criticized such deliveries, claiming they exacerbate the conflict.
