A male school bus driver in North Carolina has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting multiple teenage boys, according to authorities. Leetwain Darrell Tate, 48, was accused of luring minors to his residence and engaging in sexual acts, including offering money for sex. The case involves at least four victims aged 14 to 15, with investigators suggesting there may be more.
Tate, who previously worked as a school bus driver at Sugar Creek Charter School, was suspended during an investigation and later terminated from his position. He faces two counts of statutory rape, six counts of indecent liberties with a minor, and one count of statutory sex offense. Police stated the alleged crimes did not occur on school property or while Tate was operating a bus.
The arrest followed an inquiry by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Crimes Against Children Unit. Tate was taken into custody without incident and is currently in Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office custody. His family, present at a court appearance, expressed belief in his innocence.
Authorities emphasized the challenges victims face in coming forward, noting that fear, shame, or threats often prevent reporting. A police official praised the courage of the juveniles who spoke out against Tate.
The case has sparked concerns about school hiring practices and oversight, with critics questioning how individuals accused of such crimes could be entrusted with children.
