Rapper Soulja Boy, whose legal name is DeAndre Cortez Way, has hinted at a presidential campaign for the year 2028, outlining a platform focused on four key issues.
“A new chapter. A bigger vision. A commitment to creating opportunities for the next generation,” the artist wrote on Instagram. “My focus is on four things: economic opportunity, criminal justice reform, education, and the future of technology and AI.”
“From music to business to technology, I’ve always believed in thinking bigger and challenging what’s possible. Now I’m exploring what it means to bring that same vision to public service,” he added. “Vote for Soulja Boy 2028,” he stated on X.
Way has not announced a formal campaign or specified which political party he would represent. Born in Chicago, Way moved to Atlanta with his family at age six. He became interested in rap during his childhood and relocated to Batesville, Mississippi at 14 to live with his father, who provided him with a home recording studio.
Way began sharing music online as a teenager and gained national attention with his 2007 single “Crank That (Soulja Boy)”, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for seven nonconsecutive weeks.
Soulja Boy performed at the Crypto Ball during President Trump’s 2025 inauguration festivities. In a 2019 sketch, Chris Redd portrayed Soulja Boy in a fictional scenario that humorously suggested he was running for president, drawing inspiration from his viral “Breakfast Club” interview.
Soulja Boy is not the first rapper to flirt with the White House; Kanye West made a run for president in 2020.
From “Crank That” to commander in chief? We’ll see if Soulja can turn his presidential ambitions into more than a catchy campaign slogan.
