LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt has revealed that death threats he received during his peak as a reality star prompted him to join the Republican Party.
Known for playing a recurring villain on the MTV series “The Hills,” Pratt stated that security and police advised him to obtain firearms after facing intense threats. “When I was a hated reality star, I got so many death threats –– I had so much security and police, and what did they tell me to do?” he recounted.
“‘Get a gun.’ This is real. I know people don’t like guns, but L.A. was dangerous if you’re hated. So, I got a gun, my wife got a gun,” Pratt added. The candidate noted that he and his wife, Heidi Montag, required concealed carry permits, which he described as supported exclusively by Republicans. “That was what I aligned with: my safety, my personal safety and my family’s safety,” he said.
Pratt acknowledged the contentious nature of gun ownership in Los Angeles but emphasized his plan to deploy Los Angeles Police Department officers to every school in the city to prevent gun violence.
President Trump praised Pratt’s candidacy during a recent appearance at Joint Base Andrews for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Commencement, stating, “I’d like to see him do well.” When asked which modern politician he aligns with most closely, Pratt compared himself to Barack Obama.
The interview also featured Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who dismissed questions about her pledge to end street homelessness in the city, attributing her lack of progress to “bureaucratic barriers.” A scheduled interview with mayoral hopeful Nithya Raman is set for Thursday.
