ESPN host Stephen A. Smith, who has hinted at a potential presidential bid for 2028, stated that Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) could be the one to convert him into a Republican.
Smith described Donalds as “the real deal,” noting his consistent battles with Democrats and others across multiple platforms. “I ain’t no damn Republican,” Smith said. “But if anybody could make me one, it would be him. I’m just going to keep it a buck.”
A Donalds campaign official confirmed their friendship and highlighted that Donalds is attracting voters by emphasizing affordability and public safety. Campaign communications director Gates McGavick stated: “Byron Donalds is drawing support from Floridians of all backgrounds because he has a clear vision to make Florida more affordable, keep Floridians safe, and ensure the radical left stays out of the Sunshine State.”
According to a James Madison Institute poll released on August 6, Donalds leads likely Republican primary voters at 49%, significantly ahead of Lt. Gov. Jay Collins.
Smith also addressed his potential presidential run, saying he would only be concerned about Marco Rubio due to Rubio’s “impeccable credentials.” Smith expressed confidence in defeating any Democratic candidate but has not finalized his decision for the 2028 election.
