Tax Day 2026 Sets Record: Over 53 Million Americans Receive Larger Refunds

The Treasury Department reported today that 53 million Americans utilized tax provisions from President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” during the filing season.

This represents a significant milestone, with the average refund amount reaching $3,462—up 11% from last year and nearly 20% compared to the four-year average prior to President Trump’s presidency.

Key deductions drove this success:
– Six million tipped workers claimed the no-tax-on-tips deduction, averaging $7,100 in savings.
– Twenty-five million individuals used the overtime deduction, with an average benefit of $3,100.
– Thirty million older Americans took advantage of the no-tax-on-Social-Security break, earning an average of $7,500.
– One hundred five million taxpayers benefited from the doubled standard deduction.

President Trump described these windfalls as “refunds of $5,000, $8,000, $11,000 that they had no idea” would be received. The White House noted this outcome resulted from President Trump’s signature Working Families Tax Cuts Act—every single Democrat in Congress voted against it.

This filing season marks the largest refund season in recent memory, with over 53 million Americans receiving tax breaks for the first time.
