Tennessee Special Election Tests Loyalty Amid Political Shifts

Voters in Tennessee’s 7th congressional district are preparing to cast their ballots Tuesday for a special election pitting Republican US Army combat veteran Matt Van Epps against Democrat state Rep. Aftyn Behn.

The candidates aim to succeed where former Representative Mark Green (R-TN) retired last year, leaving the seat open. President Donald Trump actively campaigned for Van Epps via social media, urging supporters to mobilize heavily: “I am asking all America First Patriots in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District to please GET OUT AND VOTE for a phenomenal Candidate and MAGA Warrior, Matt Van Epps! You can win this Election for Matt… HE WILL BE A GREAT CONGRESSMAN…”

Van Epps faces an opponent viewed as embodying anti-Trump sentiment. The race is framed by both sides as a crucial referendum on the national political landscape ahead of future elections.

Campaign finance groups representing both candidates have deployed millions in resources to influence outcomes within the district, with high-profile figures like President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson noted for their involvement supporting Van Epps. Despite Democratic predictions about potential gains elsewhere due to cost-of-living issues (like those that benefited them in recent Northeastern victories), Republican concerns persist here given Green’s previous commanding margins.

Al Gore addressed the political shift, suggesting even traditionally red districts are feeling changes: “Tennessee, listen up… I have never seen the political tides shift as far and as fast…”
