Tragic Passing of Former Pro Bowl RB Doug Martin at Age 36

Doug Martin, a former All-Pro running back, has died at age 36. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers confirmed the news Saturday, citing an unspecified cause of death. Martin spent seven seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Buccaneers, where he became a fan favorite during his early career.

Martin’s family released a statement expressing sorrow over his sudden passing, while the Buccaneers honored his legacy, noting his “lasting impact” on the franchise. The 5-foot-9 running back earned the nickname “Muscle Hamster” for his physical style of play, accumulating 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns across his career.

A first-round pick in 2012, Martin burst onto the scene with a Pro Bowl-caliber rookie season, tallying 1,454 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. His peak came in 2015, when he recorded 1,402 rushing yards and six touchdowns. After leaving the Buccaneers in 2017, he played briefly for the Raiders before retiring due to injury.

Boise State Football paid tribute to Martin, calling him a “Bronco legend.” His collegiate career at Boise State included 3,431 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns, ranking third in school history. Fans and teammates alike remembered him as a standout athlete who left an indelible mark on the game.
