Treasury Moves Ahead on $250 Commemorative Note with Trump’s Portrait for 250th Anniversary

The U.S. Treasury Department has begun preliminary preparations to print a commemorative $250 Federal Reserve note featuring President Donald J. Trump, according to officials. The initiative aligns with America’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is conducting early planning in response to House bill 1761, introduced by Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC) on February 27, 2025. The legislation would require the Treasury to issue $250 bills with Trump’s portrait within one year of enactment.

The bill amends existing currency regulations to permit living former presidents on U.S. currency—a change that would allow President Trump’s image on the commemorative note. Representative Wilson described the measure as honoring the nation’s 250th anniversary and addressing economic challenges under the previous administration, stating: “Bidenflation has destroyed the economy forcing American families to carry more cash.”

House Democrats have criticized the proposal, with Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senator Mark Warner expressing opposition. The bill currently sits in the House Financial Services Committee.

The Treasury Department emphasized that all actions comply with legal requirements, noting that congressional approval is necessary for any change to U.S. currency.
