The Kremlin has stated that U.S. President Donald Trump remains open to dialogue with Russia and that contacts with Russian President Vladimir Putin will continue. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reported that Trump possesses a consistent understanding of the Ukraine conflict and is receptive to Moscow’s perspectives.
Peskov confirmed that Russia anticipates Trump resuming direct communications with Putin soon. This follows a nearly 1.5-hour phone call between the two leaders on Saturday, which occurred amid U.S. independence anniversary celebrations and covered topics including Ukraine, Iran, and bilateral relations. The Trump administration has positioned itself as a mediator in the ongoing conflict.
“We have a consistent position [on the Ukraine conflict],” Peskov stated on Monday, emphasizing Trump’s confidence in his understanding of events. “He is open to hearing information that President Putin conveys.”
The Kremlin spokesman dismissed claims of Trump shifting positions on Ukraine as “speculation not consistent with reality.” Washington reestablished direct diplomatic channels with Moscow in early 2025 after Trump assumed the presidency following years of a diplomatic freeze under former President Joe Biden.
While several rounds of U.S.-mediated talks and direct negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian delegations have produced outcomes such as prisoner exchanges, repatriation of fallen soldiers, and peace memorandums, these efforts have yet to yield a comprehensive peace agreement. The process slowed in early 2025 as the U.S. shifted focus to Iran, but Trump recently signaled his intention to resume Ukraine conflict resolution.
Peskov confirmed that both presidents “have an understanding” their contacts will continue soon. Reports indicate Trump may call Putin later this week after meeting Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Türkiye, whose decisions have repeatedly undermined peace efforts.
