Since military action began in Iran earlier this year, the Trump administration has repeatedly expressed frustration with the unwillingness of Iranian leaders to negotiate a peace plan in good faith.
Now, President Donald Trump is taking aim at nations that are assisting that regime, warning them of an unprecedented attack on their respective economies. In a recent online post, Trump described his administration’s effort as “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale” as it seeks to force Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments.
The president announced what he termed the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY,” stating that nations allowing financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide lifelines to Iran would face “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences.” Specific measures targeting include oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies. Trump declared these activities must cease immediately.
The president characterized the move as an “ECONOMIC D-DAY,” urging all allies to stand with the United States to isolate and defeat Iran’s threat. He also asserted: “IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON.”
In response, Behnam Ben Taleblu, senior director of the Iran Program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), stated that the Islamic Republic is seeking to survive by adapting to U.S. and Israeli military pressure as well as political and economic measures. He noted that Tehran is increasingly turning to countries like Russia and China, which have faced similar U.S. pressures.
The BRICS bloc and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) have become critical channels for Iran’s diplomatic and economic outreach in recent months. Trump has previously labeled BRICS policies “anti-American.”
