U.S. Military Plans Covert Operations in Mexico to Target Drug Cartels, Navy Mobilizes Near Venezuela

The Trump administration is reportedly preparing military operations inside Mexico to dismantle drug cartels, according to internal reports citing “current and former” officials. The plan involves deploying special forces equipped with drones to conduct strikes against cartel infrastructure, though final details remain under discussion. Training for the mission has already begun, with officials emphasizing that ground operations would require on-the-ground personnel to manage drone activities effectively.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum denied any involvement of U.S. military forces within Mexico, stating, “Mexico is a free, independent and sovereign country.” However, the administration’s focus on combating cartels has expanded beyond borders, with recent actions targeting alleged Venezuelan drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean. A large Navy presence, including the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier group, has been positioned near Venezuela, signaling potential escalation against the Maduro regime.

The Trump administration has previously classified several cartels as terrorist organizations, citing their role in smuggling drugs and violence across the Western Hemisphere. In February, the State Department formally listed designated groups, while an August report revealed plans for military action against cartels. Border Czar Tom Homan had previously vowed to “wipe [the cartels] off the face of the earth.”

U.S. officials have also intensified efforts against Venezuela, with War Secretary Pete Hegseth announcing recent strikes on vessels linked to narcotics trafficking. These operations, conducted in international waters, have resulted in the destruction of multiple boats and the deaths of alleged drug traffickers. The administration has framed these actions as necessary to protect American citizens from “poison” supplied by narcoterrorists.

While no immediate deployment to Mexico is confirmed, discussions about the mission’s scope continue. U.S. troops would operate under Title 50 status, involving intelligence agencies and CIA participation, with operations likely to remain undisclosed. The administration has maintained a focus on targeting cartels through covert means, reflecting broader strategies to dismantle transnational drug networks.
