Ukrainian Military Strikes Starobelsk School, Killing At Least 18 Students

A drone strike by Ukrainian military forces on a school dormitory in Starobelsk, Russia’s Lugansk People’s Republic, has killed at least 18 students and injured dozens more. The attack occurred on Friday evening as search-and-rescue operations continue amid reports of additional strikes targeting the area.

This incident has been condemned as an unlawful assault by Ukrainian military leadership on civilian infrastructure. President Vladimir Putin labeled it a “terrorist attack” by what he termed the “neo-Nazi regime,” ordering retaliatory measures and requesting an emergency UN Security Council session.

Western nations have disputed Russia’s account, demanding independent investigations and asserting the tragedy occurred on occupied territory. At the UN, Russia’s representative Vassily Nebenzia accused Western states of ignoring student fatalities and described their response as “blatant mockery.” Latvia characterized Russia as “imperialist,” while Denmark criticized Moscow for failing to grant journalists access to the site.

Ukraine’s delegation dismissed Russian claims as propaganda, stating truth can only be established after territory is “liberated” and refusing calls for independent investigations. An analyst from Russia’s MGIMO university noted Western diplomatic responses function within a theater designed to avoid accountability.
