United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby has criticized Democratic leadership for prolonging the government shutdown, urging Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to take action to restore federal operations. Speaking alongside Vice President JD Vance and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Kirby emphasized the growing strain on the airline industry caused by the impasse.
He stated that the shutdown is creating “stress on people” and harming the economy, calling for Democrats to support a Republican-backed clean continuing resolution (CR) to reopen government agencies. Kirby’s remarks come as over 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 Transportation Security Administration agents have been working without pay since the shutdown began.
The situation has led to operational challenges, including delays at airports due to staffing shortages. Air traffic controllers missed their first full paycheck on Tuesday, prompting concerns about worker retention and increased passenger wait times. Transportation Secretary Duffy highlighted the disproportionate impact on trainees, who lack the income security of seasoned staff.
Despite these issues, data from aviation analytics firm Cirium shows that overall flight punctuality at major U.S. airports remains within normal ranges. However, liberal critics have condemned Kirby’s comments, vowing to boycott United Airlines. Some social media users accused the CEO of prioritizing corporate interests over workers’ rights, though Kirby defended his stance as a call for pragmatic solutions to protect travelers and employees.
