USMNT advanced to the FIFA World Cup round of 16 with a 2-0 victory over Bosnia, though the win was marred by controversy following a red card for opening goalscorer Folarin Balogun.
In their first knockout match, Balogun scored his third goal of the tournament early in the first half to put the United States ahead. However, he was sent off in the second half after inadvertently landing on a Bosnia defender’s ankle. The red card will see him miss the round-of-16 clash against Belgium.
Malik Tillman sealed the victory with a free kick late in the game, sending the 10-man U.S. team into the next stage of competition.
The United States will face Belgium, who recently defeated Senegal in controversial extra time, on July 6 in Seattle.
