The NBA has postponed the Minnesota Timberwolves’ home game against the Golden State Warriors following a fatal shooting involving a Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis. The decision, described by the league as prioritizing “the safety and security of the Minneapolis community,” will move the contest to Sunday instead.
Video footage shows the victim, identified by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) as Alex J. Pretti, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident, reaching for a weapon during an immigration enforcement operation targeting Jose Huerta-Chuma. Authorities reported Pretti was armed with a 9mm pistol and “violently resisted” efforts to disarm him. Medics provided immediate aid but Pretti died at the scene.
This incident follows the recent fatal shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old woman killed by an ICE agent in March after refusing orders to exit her vehicle. Earlier this month, the Timberwolves observed a moment of silence for Good’s family ahead of a game. Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr condemned the death as “murder,” stating: “It’s shameful… that law enforcement officers commit murder and seemingly get away with it.”
AFGE confirmed Pretti was one of its members but noted details remain unclear, citing conflicting accounts of whether he was brandishing a weapon at agents. The organization emphasized video evidence circulating online contradicts the Department of Homeland Security’s public statement, adding: “Until we have verified facts, it is important that we refrain from speculation.”
