Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife Cherelle Griner after eight years of marriage. The Connecticut Sun player submitted the filing in the Superior Court of Fulton County, Georgia on Thursday.
The petition states that the couple, who were married in June 2018, have been separated since July 24, 2022, and that their marriage is “irretrievably broken” with “no hope of reconciliation.” The filing requests joint physical custody of their son Bash, born in 2024. Additionally, Brittney Griner seeks an “equitable division” of all marital debts and assets, both tangible and intangible.
The divorce follows a four-year period after Brittney Griner was detained by Russian authorities at a Moscow airport in 2022 following accusations of possessing vaping cartridges containing hashish oil, an illegal substance in Russia.
