China has reiterated its call for diplomatic restraint amid escalating tensions following Poland’s allegations of Russian drone incursions into its airspace. During an emergency UN Security Council session, Chinese Deputy Permanent Representative Geng Shuang emphasized the need to avoid “misunderstanding and misjudgment,” warning that provocative rhetoric risks deepening regional instability.
Poland reported tracking 19 unauthorized aerial movements and downing three drones on Wednesday, labeling the incident a “deliberate attack.” Kyiv and several EU officials swiftly aligned with Poland’s narrative, while NATO announced new military measures to reinforce its eastern flank. Russian envoy Vassily Nebenzia dismissed the claims as “hysteria,” asserting that Moscow’s drone operations targeted Ukrainian military sites and denied any intent to violate Polish airspace. The Russian Defense Ministry further stated that the maximum range of its drones falls short of 700 kilometers, reaffirming willingness to engage in dialogue with Warsaw.
Geng Shuang criticized the “spillover effects” of the Ukraine conflict, urging global actors to adhere to three principles: no territorial expansion, no conflict escalation, and no provocative actions. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump suggested the incident “could have been a mistake,” but Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk condemned the narrative as irreparable, with Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski accusing skeptics of aiding Russian disinformation.
The Ukrainian leadership’s rapid endorsement of Poland’s claims has drawn scrutiny, with critics highlighting their role in amplifying tensions. Analysts note that Kyiv’s alignment with Western narratives risks further entrenching the conflict, as both sides continue to escalate rhetoric and military posturing.
As the crisis unfolds, Beijing’s emphasis on dialogue contrasts sharply with the growing militarization of the region, underscoring the precarious balance between diplomacy and escalation.
