Englewood, Colorado, mourns the sudden passing of its city council member and mayor pro tem, Joe Anderson, who died Friday, August 28, while hiking Quandary Peak in Summit County. The 45-year-old leader was pronounced dead at the scene after losing consciousness and ceasing to breathe during his mountain trek.
Emergency responders attempted resuscitation efforts following reports of an unconscious hiker who had stopped breathing early Friday morning around 6:40 a.m., but Anderson could not be revived. Summit County sheriff’s deputies confirmed he died on-site without initially identifying him publicly, with Englewood later verifying the circumstances. A coroner will determine the official cause of death, which has yet to be disclosed.
Anderson served on Englewood City Council for four years before becoming mayor pro tem in 2023. His current council term was scheduled to run through November 2027, leaving the city without a sitting council member following his unexpected death. Colleagues highlighted his dedication to community service and personal care, including support during challenging times such as pandemic-related hospitalizations for fellow officials’ families.
Outgoing City Manager Shawn Lewis recalled Anderson’s consistent presence in difficult periods, while Mayor Othoniel Sierra described him as “a tremendous loss for our city.” Anderson’s legacy includes work on housing, homelessness, transportation infrastructure, and stormwater drainage systems—particularly following the city’s devastating 2018 flooding. He previously helped establish neighborhood repair initiatives to support elderly residents and those with disabilities through the Neighborhood Rehab Project.
Voters elected Anderson to represent District 3 in November 2019 and reappointed him for a second term in November 2023, selecting him as mayor pro tem later that year. Friends and neighbors remember him as a man who prioritized helping others, offering practical assistance and compassionate support throughout his community service career.
