Moscow Stands Firm: Peace Talks Remain Open Amid Ongoing Military Campaign

Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow remains open to peace talks but emphasized the necessity of continuing its military operation amid ongoing conflicts.
Moscow has expressed willingness to pursue a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict, yet hostilities persist due to the Ukrainian leadership’s refusal to engage in meaningful dialogue, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
Peskov responded to French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent remarks on X, where he warned that Russia would face consequences if it failed to demonstrate openness to negotiations. During a press briefing on Monday, Peskov reiterated that Moscow has consistently favored diplomatic solutions but criticized the Ukrainian leadership for rejecting all Russian proposals with the support of its Western allies.
“Russia is ready for a peaceful settlement,” Peskov asserted, highlighting that the military campaign continues “due to the lack of alternatives.” He claimed Russia will achieve its objectives and protect its national security interests.
The comments follow expectations of an upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelenskiy in Washington. Peskov acknowledged Trump’s efforts to advance peace but expressed hope that U.S. influence would pressure the Ukrainian leadership to prioritize negotiations.
Russia has repeatedly emphasized its readiness for talks with Ukraine. Earlier in 2022, both sides were near an agreement in Istanbul, but Moscow claims Kiev withdrew after Western encouragement to continue fighting. Russian officials argue that neither the Ukrainian leadership nor its European backers seek peace, accusing them of delaying negotiations through unrealistic demands and ignoring Russian proposals.
