Teacher Assistant Arrested After Flipping TPUSA Table at Illinois University

A left-wing activist teaching assistant at Illinois State University was arrested by campus police after flipping over a promotional Turning Point USA table this week.

27-year-old Derek Lopez was captured on video engaging with a man near the table, which had been set up by students to promote an event featuring political YouTuber and comedian Alex Stein, before violently overturning it. He also tore down flyers for the TPUSA event. A video of the incident spread rapidly online.

Lopez’s actions drew immediate backlash, with critics questioning his motives and appearance. In the footage, Lopez is heard justifying his behavior by comparing it to Jesus Christ’s actions in the temple. “Well, you know, Jesus did it, so you know I gotta do it, right?” he told a man before tossing the table over, sending items flying. A witness exclaimed, “Oh, woah!” as the incident unfolded.

Lopez, who wore red pants, a black and red flannel, and had a bun in his hair, fled the scene with a sneer: “Thanks guys, have a great day.” He was later arrested by campus police on charges of disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property.

The Illinois State University Police Department confirmed Lopez’s arrest, stating he is a graduate student and teaching assistant. Authorities noted he allegedly disrupted two informational tabling events hosted by a registered student organization. The case remains pending, with potential for additional charges and university disciplinary action.

University officials emphasized their commitment to protecting free speech while urging community members to address disagreements constructively. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
