A woman armed with two knives stabbed a man and a woman in Times Square on Monday afternoon before NYPD officers deployed a Taser and opened fire as she moved toward them. The incident occurred at approximately 4:27 p.m. near West 43rd Street and Seventh Avenue, just steps from the NYPD substation.
Five people were hospitalized, including two police officers. The female stabbing victim was reported in critical condition, while the alleged attacker sustained life-threatening injuries.
Police stated that the attack did not appear to be terrorism-related. Witnesses described the woman, wearing a peach-colored shirt, waving both knives as officers repeatedly ordered her to discontinue the threat. After initial use of the Taser without effect, police fired shots when the woman continued advancing toward them.
The FDNY transported three civilians from the scene, and authorities sealed off part of the area while collecting video footage and witness accounts. A public alert warned drivers and subway riders to expect road closures and transit disruptions around 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue.
Investigations into the incident remain active as police seek to determine the motive and circumstances leading to the violence.
