The Trump administration is triggering widespread concern among legacy media outlets over its agenda to relax gun rules.
Recent reports indicate that the administration has initiated a significant rollback of more than 30 firearms regulations, including efforts to abandon restrictions on illegal sales, restore firearm rights for certain individuals with mental health conditions, and reduce oversight of private weapons transactions.
These proposed changes would reportedly allow Americans to ship handguns through the mail, eliminate Biden-era background check requirements, and make it more difficult to revoke a gun dealer’s license.
Some of these regulatory shifts have been in development during the Trump administration’s second term. In April, the ATF announced reforms aimed at reducing burdens on law-abiding gun owners and businesses by streamlining forms and reversing bans on certain types of ammunition.
The ATF spokesperson stated that the changes would focus on “willful violators and criminal actors, not inadvertent compliance issues by responsible owners and licensees.”
Brady Campaign spokesperson Kris Brown criticized the policy shifts, stating they take the industry “back 100 years” and decimate the ATF’s ability to regulate firearms.
The administration has also challenged gun regulations in several Democratic-leaning states, including Colorado, Virginia, and California. In recent weeks, it has sued California over restrictions on Glock-style handguns and Virginia over limits on semiautomatic rifles.
Despite the controversy, surveys suggest that up to half of American households own firearms, with a surge in gun ownership among Democrats since 2020.
The administration’s approach has drawn attention to the complex interplay between regulatory frameworks and public safety concerns, particularly as the ATF reports increased criminal referrals related to firearm trafficking.
Any citizen who lives in a country that won’t allow him or her lethal means of self-defense lives in a state of tyranny. Self-defense falls under the umbrella of the right to life. A government that doesn’t allow gun ownership wants a monopoly on force, and a government that owns all the means of force is a very dangerous government.
