President Donald J. Trump has issued a letter to NATO nations and global leaders, outlining conditions for immediate sanctions against Russia. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated he is prepared to impose significant penalties on Russia if NATO countries collectively cease purchasing Russian oil. He emphasized that NATO’s commitment to addressing the conflict has been insufficient, criticizing the continued reliance on Russian energy as a weakening factor in negotiations.
The letter reads: “I am ready to do major Sanctions on Russia when all NATO Nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA. As you know, NATO’S commitment to WIN has been far less than 100%, and the purchase of Russian Oil, by some, has been shocking! It greatly weakens your negotiating position, and bargaining power, over Russia.” Trump also proposed that NATO impose 50% to 100% tariffs on China, which he claimed would disrupt Moscow’s ties with Beijing. “This is not TRUMP’S WAR (it would never have started if I was President!), it is Biden’s and Zelenskyy’s WAR,” he wrote, adding that the conflict has cost 7,118 lives in a single week.
Recent tensions between Russia and Poland have intensified, with suspected Russian drones entering Polish airspace during an attack on Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incident as the closest to open conflict since World War II, though Moscow denied targeting Polish facilities. Trump suggested the breach could have been a mistake, but U.S. officials reiterated support for NATO allies. Acting U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea warned that violating airspace “intentionally or otherwise” demonstrated disrespect for peace efforts, vowing to defend “every inch of NATO territory.”
